Aquaponics Interest Group: Biofilter Build

This meetup is for anyone with an interest in aquaponics, hydroponics, aquaculture (fish farming), or sustainable backyard agriculture. Attendance is free and you don’t need to be a Robot Garden member but we are asking for donations to cover the cost of materials to build the system, please chip in what you can. Robot Garden is a 501c3 non-profit and your donations are tax deductible.

This time around we’ll be getting started on the biofilter for our aquaculture/aquaponics system. To do this we’ll be cutting off the top of our IBC tote, introducing filter media and getting an air pump set up. Then we’ll add a few fish and that will be pretty much it. The idea here is to just get something up and running so that beneficial nitrogen fixing bacteria can start colonizing our filter media. (See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nitrification for more.) Time and resources permitting we may also add a partition to create a sump below the biofiltration area.

Later, once the biofilter is up and running we’ll build a separate tank for the fish. Then after that, the fun stuff: remote maintenance and sensors.
