Every year, Alameda County Fair has a STEAM weekend “Robots and Rockets”, which is very popular with young and old. Robot Garden helps with the programming and does robot displays, judges robot competitions, gets robot exhibitors along etc.
It shouldn’t come as a surprise that I’ve always got ideas but to get to something that we can do, that’s portable and visual and cheap etc… that’s whole ‘nother thing. Plus it’s a busy time of year and it’s always a mad scramble to get anything done for June, so I appreciated all the extra heads and hands brainstorming ideas and giving the project a push over the finish line.
Especially big thanks to Mark Rose for doing all the Raspberry Pi and Makey Makey build, plus Zoe and Miranda for keeping Art Wall and Vex Robot display working all weekend. It worked a treat and was very very popular.
What did we build? The key concept was an interactive wall showcasing some basic electronics. It had to be durable and simple to use. In brainstorming sessions, we opted to use Makey Makey and Raspberry Pi to create a ‘garden’ that would play music, a hybrid electronic agricultural art piece.
